Vastu Shastra is an ancient Indian architectural science that harmonizes buildings with natural and cosmic energies. One of its most crucial mathematical components is Vastu Aaya (Ayadi Calculations), which determines the auspiciousness of a plot or structure based on its dimensions.
Vastu Shastra views every building as a living thing, influenced by five fundamental elements (earth, water, fire, air, space) and by the positions of the sun, moon, planets, and stars. To ensure health, prosperity, and harmony for occupants, home must be laid out in accordance with these elemental and celestial forces.
Vastu Aaya is derived from Ayadi Shadvarga (six key calculations) mentioned in ancient texts like Vishwakarma Prakashika and Mayamatam. They are
In Vastu Shastra, the Aaya Varga categorizes the eight types of directions based on their auspiciousness. Each type is connected to a specific direction, and the characteristics of the direction play an important role in determining the energy flow and prosperity within a building.
Aaya Type | Direction | Auspiciousness |
---|---|---|
Dwajayam | East | Auspicious |
Dhumayam | South-East | Inauspicious |
Shimayam | South | Auspicious |
Shwanayam | South-West | Inauspicious |
Vrushabayam | West | Auspicious |
Kharayam | North-West | Inauspicious |
Gajayam | North | Auspicious |
Kakayam | North-East | Inauspicious |
Dhanam refers to the wealth or financial gain that is believed to bring financial prosperity. A higher Dhanam value is considered good because it indicates the prosperity and financial growth. Ideally, the wealth generated should be greater than the financial burdens (Vyaya).
Vyaya or Runam represents the expenses or financial burdens a structure might create, A high Vyaya value is considered inauspicious as it may lead to financial losses or burdens.
Labham is the difference between Dhanam (wealth) and Vyaya (expenses). A positive Labham value indicates more wealth than expenses, which is considered auspicious. A negative Labham value may lead to financial losses.
Ayuvu is the expected lifespan of a building, which indicates its long-term stability and health. If the calculated lifespan is over 60 years, the structure is considered beneficial for its occupants. A lifespan under 60 years is generally regarded as inauspicious.
Nakshatra refers to the lunar mansion or constellation that influences the energy of a building. Each Nakshatra has its own characteristics and can affect the occupants' well-being. The Nakshatra value is derived from the total area of the plot.
Tithi is the lunar day, which is calculated based on the total area of the plot. Each Tithi has its own significance. Some Tithis are considered more auspicious than others.
Vaara refers to the day of the week, which is also derived from the total area. Each day is ruled by a specific planet, and in Vastu Shastra, certain days are believed to bring more favorable outcomes than others.
